Abaka highway is an old road connecting Hakusan Heisenji temple and Ichijodani by the shortest cut. This highway starts from Heisenji and leads to Abaka, a river port in Ichijodani, by way of ferry service at Nakajima and Yomogi slope, crossing a mountain pass from present-day Shikadani-cho, Katsuyama City and passing through Miyama district in Fukui City. In Shikadani-cho remains the site of Saikoji (Hota) castle which is said to have been built by Shogen Shimada. He was a retainer of Kageakira Asakura, a district manager of Ohno and cousin of Yoshikage Asakura. Shogen Shimada subsequently became a samurai general in the battle against Ikko-ikki, Jodo Shinshu Buddhist uprising.
