It is said that Heisenji temple was founded by a Buddhist monk Taicho in 717. In Medieval
Period, Heisenji temple was at its height of prosperity as a huge religious city with 48 shrines, 36 temples and 6,000 residences for monks. In 1574, however, the entire temple was attacked with fire by Ikko-ikki, Jodo Shishu Buddhist uprising. Excavational investigation
that started in 1989 has gradually revealed the whole picture of this religious city.
